Antigua’s Military Attractions

With more than 300 historical attractions split between Antigua and Barbuda, it can be overwhelming trying to determine which sites to see during your trip. One way to narrow down your choices is by planning a themed trip. Military attractions are some of the most popular landmarks in Antigua, and it is feasible to consider seeing them all in one go.

Nelson’s Dockyard National Park
At one time, Nelson’s Dockyard was one of the most significant ports for the British Royal Navy in the West Indies. Today, many of the buildings that were used during that era are still standing and open for tours. This includes the Admiral House, now a museum that covers the history of the dockyard. Visitors will also be able to visit some archeological sites and take advantage of flourishing nature trails that exist on property.

Shirley Heights Fort
Not far from Nelson’s Dockyard, visitors will find the Shirley Heights Fort. Although much of this property is in ruins, the Lookout, Blockhouse, and Ridge and Artillery Quarters are in tact enough to give guests an idea of what it may have been like to be stationed at the fort during the height of British occupation.

Fort George
Fort George sits atop Monk’s Hill, the perfect location to guard Falmouth Bay. The fort took 16 years to construct and never saw any military action, but its ruins are still somewhat haunting to those who visit today.

Fort James
Like many of the other forts on the island, Fort James sits mostly in ruins at the entrance of St. John’s Harbour. There are, however, ten canons that remain intact, and are well-visited by tourists.

Fort Barrington
Also built to fortify St. John is Fort Barrington. This fort was the only fort in Antigua that ever saw military action. Between 1666 and 1790, Fort Barrington protected St. John from French forces trying to lay claim to the island. A gun platform and a powder magazine are the major draws to this fort today.

Learning about Antigua’s military history provides a little bit of insight into the state of the island nation as it stands today. When you aren’t relaxing on the beach or participating in other touristy activities, take some time to explore these forts, which stand as some of the most significant landmarks in Antigua.

Nightlife in Jolly Harbour

Guests who choose to stay at Jolly Harbour during their Antigua vacation will find that they can easily pack their days full of pleasurable activities. From golf to watersports, the fun never stops – even when the sun goes down. Nightlife in the Jolly Harbour area is just as enthralling as the daytime activities, and range from subdued and family friendly to highly energetic and perhaps even a bit scandalous.

Bars and Nightclubs

A great way to unwind at night is with a cold beverage, music that gets you up on your feet, and a vibrant atmosphere. The bars and nightclubs in Jolly Harbour allow guests to do just that. Begin your night at Castaways, which always hosts a lively, yet low-key crowd, and offers tapas and pub-style food under a thatched roof.

Over in the Jolly Harbour Shopping Centre, there are two bars, Dogwatch Tavern and West Point Bar & Lounge. On the menu at Dogwatch Tavern is a selection of fried foods, burgers, sandwiches, and fish, which is why a number of locals frequent the joint. A number of beers are on tap, and mixed beverages keep up the island flavor. There are pool tournaments each Tuesday, and Thursday is karaoke night. The West Point Bar & Lounge is where yachtsmen often go to relax with a drink. The frequent live entertainment almost can't compare to the breathtaking view of the marina.

Just across from the Jolly Harbour Resort sits the Sugar Ridge Resort, home one of Jolly Harbour’s favorite nighttime hot spots, the Sugar Club. Sugar Club is a bar and restaurant that serves up many American favorites like pizzas, pastas, burgers, steaks, and sandwich wraps. Sushi and seafood are also on the menu, though seafood is especially highlighted on Friday nights. At least three nights a week guests enjoy live entertainment by a wide array of musicians, and a DJ spins the latest hits every Saturday night, making Sugar Club more than just a top-notch restaurant, but a hopping club as well.

Casinos

A bit of light-hearted gambling can be a fun way to spend an evening in Antigua. In whole, the selection of casinos throughout Antigua is small, and while none are located in Jolly Harbour, you will find King’s Casino less than 10 kilometers away in St. John’s. King’s Casino is not only a casino, but an entertainment Mecca. There is a wide selection of slot machines and other electronic games, as well as table games including black jack, roulette, poker, and craps. Additionally, guests can place bets on top sporting events, and even enjoy nightly live entertainment.

Other Nightlife

If you aren't up for a night of gambling, drinking, or partying, there are other options as well. Simply walking around the Jolly Harbour Shopping Centre to pick up souvenirs, and the Marina for the spectacular nighttime views are two great places to pass some time.

One favorite nighttime activity for many people is a trip to the movies. Unfortunately, there is only one theater in Antigua, and it isn't in Jolly Harbour. But, if you are willing to travel the 12.3 kilometers to Caribbean Cinemas on Friar Hills Road, you can take in one of the latest releases.

Whether you're looking for something relaxing to pass some time before bed, or a place where you can be up all night, there are plenty of options in and around Jolly Harbour.

This month, yours truly interviewed the charming and delightful Mrs. Nicholl to get her insider tips for the perfect relaxing Antigua holiday…

RB: So if I might begin by enquiring as to where you stayed & when?

CN: We chose Jolly Harbour in Antigua because it was peaceful and we stayed at the Island View Villa. We’ve actually been twice, once for my birthday in January and we loved it so much we went again in April for Easter.

RB: What was the background to the trip?

CN: I have two kids aged 2 and 3 and a stepson who’s 12, and we wanted to all get away as a family. My husband is a pilot and we get some good rates on flights, so renting a villa like that is not much different to driving away to a fancy cottage. The choice was that we could have a screaming baby in the cold at home or try and cope with it in Antigua, so guess what we did?

RB: Yes, I can empathise there. What were you most looking forward to (apart from the break)?

CN: A change of scenery, a different view, sitting on the beach looking out at the ocean as that really helps me to relax. Oh, and to someone cleaning my house! The cleaners there are amazing and lovely, so thorough and friendly; they even arranged a babysitter for us so my husband and I could go out to dinner.

RB: So, what was the Island View villa like to stay in?

CN: When you first walk in there’s this really cool courtyard and two bedrooms right at the front that are really quiet and feel very separate from the rest of the house. They were ideal for children because all the party rooms are at the back by the ocean so all the adults could stay up and not disturb the kids, make sure you take a monitor though as the soundproofing is very good! There are play pens and all the stuff you need for kids already there too which is great.

RB: What would you recommend by way of activities for people visiting your holiday destination?

CN: Castaways restaurant just down the strip is great for casual pub and island food, its not dressy, there are tables on the beach. There’s Sugar Club up the hill that has stunning views and great steak, the service was awesome too. There was Sheer Rocks on a cliff, great music, really chic, very glamorous.

It wasn’t all just about food; we went horseback riding and jet skiing which was fantastic, I highly recommend it, definitely my favourite bit of the trip. Jumping the waves on the front, so much fun!!

The second trip, we took a taxi tour around with our in-laws which was a great thing to do too.

RB: Have you got any advice for people visiting your holiday destination?

CN: Just past Castaways there are a lot of touts on the bridge who will offer you anything under the sun, literally anything. Not in a scary way, in fact it because a bit of a joke, every time we went by it’d be like “You want horses, jet skis, T-shirt?”

So if you want to do anything interesting you’ve got to talk to these guys, they are legitimate, they do actually provide the jet skis/horses etc. and they will compete against each other on price so bargain hard.

RB: What was your favourite holiday memory?

CN: My swim in the ocean every day, it was real “me time” and just floating there and forgetting everything, no worries, no sharks or jellyfish, warm water and beautiful and so blue!

RB: Would you go again? Where's next on the list?

CN: Definitely but at the moment I’ve already been there twice so for my next trip I want to get away in June/July with my husband for our 5 year anniversary, so I might try somewhere else in the Caribbean.

A Jolly Relaxing Villa Holiday with Friends in Antigua

If I was looking for somewhere to take a break from my duties with all of my chums, I’d be hard pressed to beat the Island View Beach House at Jolly Harbor. Aside from the marvellous villa, Jolly Harbor is the ideal place for large families or groups of friends who want to avoid all the hustle and bustle of St Johns (after all, one is a little too grown up for the crazy bachelor party lifestyle nowadays!).

Stunning beaches and dolphins jumping alongside your boat might make it tempting to do all your eating and drinking by the beach, but I like to mix things up a little and play host for a barbeque of fresh seafood (it is easy to execute perfect cooking on the gas grill provided) snug in our private gated community or on adventurous days venture out to some of the great restaurants to be found just moments from the seafront.

Sometimes all I want is to relax with a gin and tonic and have a chinwag with my pals in the sunshine whilst admiring the view; however if some of your group are more demanding in their entertainments, boat excursions, deep sea fishing, jet skiing, diving, snorkelling, tours, shopping and sightseeing are all on offer so your schedule can be as action packed as you require.
